Pale pink buds open to reveal fragrant, single, white flowers in spring, followed by masses of small, glossy, red crab apples which mature in autumn and persist well into the winter, providing food for wildlife. The foliage of Malus ‘Sugar Tyme’ is narrow and green in colour with a sharply serrated margin, turning yellow in autumn. The vivid red crab apples grow on long slender stalks until they mature in autumn. This deciduous tree is disease resistant and combines well with pink flowered Crab Apple varieties and a whole range of other trees and shrubs. Height: 6m (20′). Spread: 4.5m (15′).
Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.
Generally crab apples are too tart to eat raw, but their apple flavour becomes intense when cooked. Cab apples have high pectin content great for jam and jellies, and are a perfect ingredient for chutneys.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
